The Worcester Rowing Club gathered together for their first meeting
in an effort to establish both an instructional and competitive
rowing program in our area.
Interested persons reviewed a promotional video by US Rowing; the
country’s governing body for the sport. Discussions centered
on acquiring the equipment, storage and launch facilities that will
be required. Turville Creek is the body of water largely considered
to be most suitable for practice and racing. Member of the group
have found several sites along the creek and are working to gain
the support of those necessary to make this dream a reality.
With serious interest among the 40 potential members, it was concluded
that the immediate need was in building a “Dock Box”
to be used for instruction, followed by the purchase of a women’s
and a men’s four oared shell. Temporary facilities will be
made available by several members with access to the creeks where
these 44 foot long, 17 inch wide, 115 lbs boats can be carefully
launched.
The future of the club will hinge largely on their ability to find
property adjacent to the water for a large floating dock and sufficient
area for a structure to permanently store these sleek racing shells.
Boats range from 27 feet for a single person to over 57 feet for
an 8 person boat.
Enthusiasm abounds among this group with a look toward representing
our area at regional and national regattas. With some successful
fund-raising and the generosity of much needed sponsors, they will
be on their way soon.
If you want the honor of naming the first boat of the club contact
